Well, it is nice to post something positive in 2010 about potential return to work possibilities.  National Job Finders does not use online job postings to find open positions for injured workers, but I watch this as an indicator of hiring overall.  This bodes well for the potential openings we can locate for injured workers with restrictions as well. Afterall, only a very few open positions are actually advertised anywhere, over 80% are not.

If you would like to look into this information in more detail, please visit the link below to see information on a particular state or industry. I note that Michigan, the state where we do much of our workers compensation job finding is still struggling.  Though the postings are up, they have not caught up with the loss they suffered in Nov.  Despite these discouraging numbers, we have consistently been able to successfully find open, suitable, and acceptable positions for the injured worker cases in Michigan and elsewhere.

Also available at this link is a specific look at the posted jobs in relation to the number of unemployed in that industry.  Here we see that there are more jobs posted than unemployed in the healthcare industry and computer & mathematical science.  In all others, this is not the case.

The transportation and material moving industry shows the highest ratio of unemployed to open positions at 13 unemployed per posted position.  This is one of the industries from which we see most of our job finding cases.  Others are manufacturing and construction.

Online Job Demand Up?

job findingI just read the HWOL(Help wanted on line) report for August and discussed it with one of my former co-workers and peers.

Everyone in the industry is looking for ways to reduce workers comp costs. As you know, most of the money is spent on cases that exceed 7 days out of work. And, the longer a case goes on, the more expensive. The key to reducing workers compensation costs is to jump on the ball quickly.

It has been my experience that the longer a client company is with us, the younger the cases are when we receive them. We do a lot of work in Michigan, for example. The difference in costs (excluding reserves) between a case that is 12 months old and 36 months old is over 72K PER CASE.

So often I hear that "there are no jobs", "it's the economy" etc. But, there are jobs out there. They are just more difficult to find. It takes a lot of work and the right connections to find an appropriate position. This is true for any job seeker, and more so for those that must consider a permanent partial disability.

The Fact is, online job postings have increased in August overall. An independent study for different industries by state and region can be found here

Some interesting and important points from this report is that there are over 4 unemployed workers for EVERY online job posting nationwide. In Michigan, the ratio is even higher with almost 11 unemployed per job posting.

Keep in mind these numbers while also considering that over 80% of all open positions are never posted online, or in the news paper. My experience has proven that it takes an expert to find the perfect match. Leaving it in the hands of the IW (Injured Worker) , even one that is dedicated to the task of finding work, is rarely fruitful. And, if left to search out positions on their own, the IW is usually unskilled in search techniques and can be demotivated quickly by the shear enormity of the task.

A recent discussion with an expert and public speaker in the HR and Recruiting field revealed that, according to his data, job posting increases were mainly in the field of non profits, Social Services and Education. And, that there are fewer unemployed than positions open in the Healthcare field. On the other hand, New Construction jobs and other construction positions are way down. And, lastly administrative, clerical work is in very competitive at a rate of almost 5 unemployed for every open position posted in that field.

This is why there is a market for what we do. We hunt down, find and sometimes even create the open positions. We prequalify the fit for the Injured worker based on Geography, financial requirements and physical limitations. We set up the interview, and we followup. Our goal is to help reduce and cut your worker's compensation costs by agressively working to help you close your MOST expensive cases quickly.
